Toll costs in Europe: tips for roadtrippers!
Fancy a European road trip? Great plan! But don’t forget those toll costs. Yes, they can put a dent in your budget, but hey, they also save you hours in traffic. Let’s dive into what you can expect in the most visited European countries. That way you won’t be caught off guard.
🇫🇷 France:
Motorway to your wallet
In France you pay for the comfort of the autoroutes. Depending on your trip, those kilometres can really add up, count on about €0,10 per km. Luckily paying is a piece of cake with your credit card. Paris to Marseille? That’ll be roughly €50. Au revoir, savings!
🇸🇮 Slovenia:
Vignette for a smooth ride
Slovenia? Vignette required. Online you can easily sort a weekly or monthly vignette, with prices starting at €16. Tip: The tunnel from Austria to Slovenia is an expensive one. Around 13 euros per trip. But honestly, the views in Slovenia are worth every cent.
🇦🇹 Austria:
Stick and go
For Austria’s motorways you buy a vignette. Touring through the mountains for 10 days will cost you around €11,50. Longer trip? There are also monthly or annual vignettes. Note: some tunnels and passes require extra cash. You can buy these online too, but be on time because of an ‘online cooling-off period’.
🇩🇪 Germany:
Free cruising
Germany doesn’t charge tolls for passenger cars. Yes! But don’t slam that accelerator too quickly – you need an environmental sticker for some cities. The autobahn, however, is free, and sometimes without a speed limit. So you can keep driving on the cheap!
🇪🇸 Spain:
Choose your route
Spain mixes toll roads with free motorways. A little trip from Barcelona to Valencia will cost you around €30. Handy online tools let you calculate the costs in advance. Muy bien for the planners among us!
🇮🇹 Italy:
Keep moving with a Telepass
In Italy you also pay tolls, similar to France. The Telepass makes your life a lot easier: keep driving without stopping. Milan–Rome will cost you about €45. Mamma mia!
Holiday prep is key
Yes, those toll costs are a bit of a thing. But with a little preparation it’s all perfectly manageable. Get your vignettes in advance and use online calculators so you’re not surprised. That way you’ll have more left over for tapas, wine, or a few extra souvenirs. Happy travels!
